After living in the Evergreen State for 24 years, you would think that the gray and gloom of the endless winter months would pass by without regard. Wrong! In search of some rejuvenation I traveled South to the land of “350 days of sunshine”, otherwise known as Palm Desert. I quickly detected that a swimming pool, lawn chair, vitamin D, and a good book are simply all you need to clear away the somber Seattle blues.

On top of the medicinal purposes, I was able to spend some much needed time with my family. We enjoyed a few “playful” tennis matches, which always seem to bring out the best qualities in us all. Our competitive side also sprang into action as we battled the local senior citizens for the best outdoor seats at the Elephant Cafe. (They are tougher than they look!)

Traveling further south we landed in sunny San Diego. However, it was not holding up to its name and I think I saw a few rain drops. Despite the precipitation, we did discover the ocean and the sand between our toes. Oh the joy of sand between your toes…it starts off just between your toes, then ends up in your shoes, and finally makes it into your home. And before you know it, it’s in your bed!

All in all the trip was essential to the well being of my fragile, sunshine dependent existence.
